Best Time of Day to Photograph a Home's Exterior
Twilight, at golden or blue hour, gives the strongest exterior hero shot. Daytime photos still carry the detail and context.

Twilight exterior photos are taken at golden hour, when the sun is just below the horizon and gives a warm, soft glow, or at blue hour, when the sky deepens to a rich blue, according to Redfin. For real estate photography, twilight is shot as part of a day and twilight shoot.
Why is twilight used for an exterior?
At twilight, the light in the sky is balanced with the property's own lights, as ExpertPhotography explains. All interior and exterior lights go on before sunset. As dusk goes on, those lights show more and more until the two reach that balance. The blue of the sky and the yellow of the lights sit on opposite sides of the colour wheel, which gives the photo a distinctive character.
When should a twilight shoot be booked?
Book a time about two hours before sunset, and the studio coordinates the rest. The shoot is planned around the weather, the sun's position and that day's twilight time, and it adds some time on site.
The window itself is short. ExpertPhotography notes that there are only a few minutes to shoot twilight photos, and that depending on the season and latitude, dusk can last less than half an hour. Weather matters too: a few clouds can add colour, but a good sunset is hard to predict.
Does the time of year change the timing?
Yes. In spring and summer, Redfin notes, longer daylight hours mean a shorter golden hour or blue hour, so timing is crucial.
Most twilight shoots are done in summer, when days are longer, according to ExpertPhotography.
Winter is harder, with colder temperatures and potentially less light, but winter twilight photos can be very atmospheric.
Are daytime exterior photos still needed?
Yes. Twilight photos complement daytime photography rather than replace it: daytime photos give details and context, while twilight photos add evening appeal. Redfin suggests using a twilight photo as the main hero shot or among the first few images in the listing.
How should a home be prepared for twilight?
Redfin's checklist: make sure every exterior light works and is clean, including porch, landscape and architectural lighting; turn on pool or water-feature lights; turn on interior lights, especially those visible from outside; and tidy the yard and outdoor living areas, since they will be prominent in the photos.
What happens during the short window?
ExpertPhotography advises arriving at least one hour before sunset to set up the framing, because the usable window is only a few minutes. A tripod is the one essential accessory, since low light means a slow shutter speed or high ISO. It recommends bracketing at least three exposures (one correct, one for the highlights, one for the shadows) and merging them afterwards. It also says to capture one hero shot first, then a few quick secondary shots, and to aim for quality rather than quantity.
Interior lights show through doors and windows, so curtains may need closing if the light creates clutter.
What changes in autumn and winter?
Redfin says autumn foliage gives warm colours that exterior lighting can enhance, and recommends clearing fallen leaves and keeping pathways clear. In winter, colder temperatures and less light make the shoot harder, but snow and warm interior lights can create an atmospheric look. A lit fireplace or a cosy interior visible from outside helps, and all outdoor lights should work and be free of snow and ice.
How far can twilight edits go?
If the weather is poor, ExpertPhotography notes that the sky can be replaced instead of postponing the shoot, but that takes solid editing skill, and a rough or unnatural sky makes the hero shot unusable. It also warns that an image that does not match the property can create a poor first impression and undermine the listing's goal, and says to judge edits from the market's point of view, not only an artistic one.

Questions
What should be switched on for twilight photos?
Every exterior light should be working and clean, including porch lights, landscape lights and any architectural lighting. Inside, turn on all the lights, especially those visible from outside. A pool or water feature should have its lights on too.
Can a daytime exterior photo be made to look like twilight?
Yes. Virtual twilight turns daytime exterior photos into twilight-style exteriors.
How many twilight photos does a listing need?
Typically two to five, according to Redfin. That is enough to make an impact without overwhelming the listing.
